The Small Hydroelectric Power Plant (SHPP) of Agia was officially included in March 2026 in the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH)—a Cultural Route of the Council of Europe since 2019 that features institutions and sites from 28 countries.
The Regional Development Company of Crete, which has managed the Agia Industrial Heritage Site since 2021, has undertaken numerous initiatives to promote the site as a landmark of industrial history, culture, and education. As part of these efforts, and in collaboration with museologist Myrto Kontomitaki, the company prepared and submitted the candidacy dossier for inclusion in ERIH. The application was accepted by ERIH headquarters in Germany, officially recognised as the SHPP Agia Industrial Heritage Site as one of the most significant historic industrial landmarks in Greece and across Europe.
As the only industrial archaeology site in Crete with this distinction, the SHPP Agia Industrial Heritage Site is now part of a prestigious European network that highlights key industrial heritage locations. Its inclusion enables active participation in international conferences and initiatives focused on industrial heritage, strengthening networking opportunities and enhancing the visibility of the Region of Crete and PPC at both European and national levels.
Notably, this marks the third time that the Municipality of Chania has secured inclusion in a recognised Cultural Route of the Council of Europe. Previous inclusions include the Coffee Garden in the Association of Historic Cafés of Europe and the Yannis & Eleni Garedakis Typography Museum in ERIH.
A detailed press release regarding the upcoming press conference will follow shortly.
