Regional Development Company of Crete Joins the Network of Cities with Lakes as an Associate Member

The Regional Development Company of Crete has officially joined the Network of Cities with Lakes as an Associate Member, marking the beginning of a new collaboration centered on Lake Agia and the Agia Small Hydroelectric Power Plant (SHPP).

As part of this new collaboration, the President of the Network, Mr. Andreas Stergiou, visited the SHPP facilities, where he was welcomed by the company’s Director, Ms. Maria Petrantonaki. During the visit, he was briefed on the ongoing initiatives and development projects being implemented in the area.

The tour highlighted the historical significance and environmental value of the Agia Hydroelectric Power Plant, a landmark project that has played an important role in both water resource management and the electrification of Chania. Particular emphasis was placed on the plant’s contribution to the region’s sustainable development and its enduring energy heritage.

Mr. Stergiou expressed his admiration for the work being carried out in Agia, describing it as an exemplary model of how natural ecosystems, energy heritage, and sustainable development can coexist and reinforce one another. He noted that such initiatives are especially important in an era marked by growing environmental challenges, including the sustainable management of water resources. Reaffirming the Network’s commitment to this effort, he emphasized its intention to actively support future initiatives and strengthen the participation of the company as a new member.

The inclusion of the Agia Small Hydroelectric Power Plant and the Regional Development Company of Crete in the Network of Cities with Lakes establishes a new framework for cooperation aimed at promoting Lake Agia as a model destination for environmental awareness, education, and sustainable tourism development.

Over the coming months, the partners plan to implement a range of joint initiatives focused on the promotion of renewable energy, the development of educational and cultural routes, and participation in national and European programs related to environmental protection and sustainable growth.

Ms. Petrantonaki warmly thanked Mr. Stergiou for his visit and for the confidence and support he has shown since the outset of the initiative in Agia. She noted that the recognition by the Network of Cities with Lakes represents both a great honor and a strong incentive to continue advancing the company’s vision and work in the area.

The two sides have already begun planning a series of joint actions scheduled to commence next September, with the shared objective of delivering meaningful benefits for the environment, the local community, and the sustainable development of the wider region.
